My questions are: What over the counter creams or lotions are best for eczema?
What is a really gentle soap I can use on my face?
Have you ever tried prescription medicines for eczema? Did they help?
Any other eczema advice?

I have Eczema, i grew up with it ALL over my body. And i was miserable, I have gone to multiple doctors, and dermatologists…They all gave me the same stuff, I would advise you to stop washing that area as much as possible, even face wash! And at night before you go to bed put Vaseline over the patch, and keep on doing this. After a while the patch will become moisturized, and the dead skin will just flake off, it may stay red for a bit, but the burning goes away quickly.

I had really bad eczema across my nose and cheeks, i used a organic calendula based cream from a health food store and later got one that also had st johns wort in it.

It did wonders, after being told by doctors i would have it forever i was amazed at how well it worked.

Ive also got calendula tea now as well that ive kept up drinking to try and beat it for good.

most of what people have already mentioned sounds good, i think the key is good oil, to keep moisture in your skin. Nuts and seeds are a great source of oil.

Also cleaning your system so your sweat isn’t continually irritating the condition further. Maybe a detox could be beneficial and looking at trying to restore your alkaline/acid balance could also be very helpfull.

I also use Cortaid or Dermarest for when I get especially dry patches.

This can all get pretty tedious at times, and I guess what I’m looking for is a body wash that moisturizes well enough that I would only need to use lotion minimally after I shower.

Also, any recommendations on how to fade out scars from areas where I scratched too hard and broke skin would be great, too. I currently use Palmer’s Cocoa Butter lotion, but it kind of leaves a greasy residue.

Any help would be much appreciated, thanks!

My daughter has suffered with eczema since she was born. The doctor recommended Eucerin cream in the jar for her. That worked very well. As far as something that you can use, you could try the Oil of Olay cream that you use just before you get out of the shower. You rub it on and then rinse it off and pat your skiin dry. It works very well. Or you could use one of those spray on oil mists that you spray on in the shower, rinse off lightly and then pat your skin dry. Eucerin also has a cream in a pump bottle that works well and doesn’t leave your skin too greasy feeling. My daughter has been lucky enough to have outgrown most of her eczema problems, which the doctors said she would probably do. But I know that the Eucerin cream in the jar was about the only thing that gave her relief. Good Luck.

A few other points
-my GP thought it was food related, found out this is not possible. KEEP THEM ON THE BREAST.
-cologne and perfume are HUGE irritants.My daughter can not kiss daddy after he’s shaved
-Heat also irritates her.
When an irritant is present I can quite litterally watch her skin react.
If your child is at all similar, please take the advice and help them. It’s made all the difference in the world.
Do not worry about diet. It does not effect the condition. Also, perfumes of any kind are a no-no. As mentioned, perfumes of any kind effect her immediately, be forwarned, parents. Breathable fabrics are also a must. Those lovely fluffy sleepers and blankets are nice to look at but the polyester is a huge irritant.
I have not noticed a reaction when she is emotional. She is a VERY relaxed child, though. So that could be why. Even at her worst, when she was scabbed all over her face and head, she was not overly bothered by it. We handled her scratching with mittens for a couple of months until she needed to start using her hands…. and yes, Sick Kids is absolutely amazing.
To be brutally honest, I brought this information because I tried all the "home remedies" I found on the internet and for severe eczema they do not work at all. This regime is for babies who who are covored in sores and are suffering. Sorbeline is a great treatment for mild cases. Honey I’m not too sure about. I just want parents out there looking for a solution, to see this testimony…. I’ve done the work for you, as has my daughter testing the home remidies and over-the-counter products. For SEVERE baby eczema, don’t even waste your time. Take this information to your GP if they have not found the solution and ask.

Zyrtec isn’t that bad and helps retard the migration of eosinophils, thus lowering the risk of asthma and other allergies by reducing inflammation (first link – research article).

Have you tried baths with plain bath salts (like Dead Sea salts)? Those baths seem to help my son’s eczema. Certainly there is plenty of evidence that both softened water or bleach baths are helpful, just the bleach baths need further studies and you need the right directions for doing them. We compromise by offering sea salt baths.

As for the steroid treatments, yes it’s steroids and yes over use is associated with thinned out skin – especially the ones by prescription. But as a biochemist I will assure you that the large molecules can not travel very far beyond the local area applied and will not effect her endocrine system or liver at all, it’s only local so do use them to help when it’s bad. You don’t want a child with a skin infection, babies and children have been known to scratch down to blood vessels and bone when sleeping because of the itch of infection.

OH yeah, does she also have a reaction when she’s very emotional? My youngest does, I can see it move on his skin, totally weird.

One of the best methods I’ve used that seems to keep it under control is to use a zinc supplement. Take 50 milligrams a day. Also, your diet plays a very important roll in helping to control eczema.

Eczema has been around for years and many have looked for that elusive eczema treatment that will cure them of this annoying situation for once and for all. Many have thought up all forms of weird and wonderful ideas and some far to crude to put into print.

Most Doctors will tell you that Eczema and Asthma go hand in hand, and if you get the one there’s a good chance you will get the other. They are both said to be caused by allergies but medical science has come up with the thought that it is diet based rather than being close to a cat or a dog or having a house full of dust mites.

After having several members of my own family who were sufferers I asked them what they thought and everyone agreed that animals were the main offenders and that whenever they were close to a different animal the itching started. I took her to the doctors (for the 4th time about her skin) today and she has been given antibiotics for an infection that has got into a cut on her knee and caused lumpy painful sores with whiteheads down her leg (she looks like a right scab bag! ). I am hoping that the antibiotics may be the cure she needs and that she will go back to having the lovely skin she had before, once the weeks antibiotic course has finished.

The doctor today said that there are no other remedies for her skin other than the prescribed creams but she is so itchy and uncomfortable-which as i said, dont apper to be working. Does anyone know of any other remedies that may help or soothe her skin? (preferably cheap ones!) Look forward to some effective, constructive ideas, thanks

Eczeme is one of those conditions that GPs tend to neglect. Its difficult to treat at times, but she should grow out of it in time. Sometimes the most effective treatments are the simplest. I had the same as a child and my mother followed a religious routine for several months which soon cleared it up –

Twice a day (morning and night) cover her from head to toe in a simple moisturiser. If the duprobase isnt working then ask your GP for another. But do not use E45. Only put a very small amount of steriod cream on the bits that look the worst. These creams tend to be overused and less effective if too much is used.

Then at least once a day bath her in Oilatum bath oil. Let her sit in it for at least 10 minutes. The key to this is moisture. You have to keep her skin moisturised.

As well as this you might find that changing washing powders ASWELL will help. Change to non-bio or a powder designed for new borns is great. Try to find Filetti. Its what I used.

On top of that avoid all perfumed products, and avoid soap like the plague! If you do all this, eventually it will get better. The key is consistancy. Do it all the time and you’ll notice the difference. Good Luck x

Allergies to food include shellfish, garlic, and others. Stop eating things like cheese, then milk products, then anything brewed (beer, yogurt, breads made with yeast). When it goes away, then you have some idea of what you should stop eating.
